HMS Heron is located near Yeovil, Somerset consisting of around 1400 acres of airfield sites at Yeovilton and the satellite at Ilton (Merryfield). Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton is a large multi-role air station and one of the busiest military airfields in the UK. Merryfield is a satellite airfield to the west of Yeovilton and, although no aircraft are actually based there it is used for helicopter pilot training
RNAS Yeovilton is home to RN Lynx Helicopters and RN Commando Helicopter Force. The Station operates over 100 aircraft in four different categories and is manned by service and civilian personnel including MoD employees and permanent contractors. Training of aircrew and engineers of resident aircraft types is carried out at Yeovilton, and it is also the location for the RN Fighter Controller School and RN School of Aircraft Control, training fighter and helicopter controllers. In addition, the Air Station is co-located with a large support staff element of the MoD Defence Equipment and Support Organzation, and the world famous Fleet Air Arm Museum.
RNAS Yeovilton is situated about 2 miles from Ilchester and 8 miles from Yeovil which has a variety of leisure amenities including a 10 screen cinema, bowling alley, swimming pool, golf courses, theatre and ski centre.
RNAS Yeovilton provides excellent facilities, which include a fully equipped gymnasium & fitness suite complex, an indoor swimming pool, football pitches and tennis courts. The base also has an Education and Resettlement centre, Library, Internet computer suite, Barber, NAAFI/Spar shop, Post Office, Tailoress, Chaplaincy, and Motor Centre. There is a Junior Rates Club – “Jesters” with a Leading Hands & Corporals Mess upstairs and the Senior Rates and Warrant Officers Mess and the Wardroom. All of these hold regular events and functions.
